Wisteria 'Macrobotrys'

Has been cultivated in Japan for over 400 years and is a highly honoured premium variety there. Extremely long flower clusters (up to approx. 60 cm, in Japan also more than 100 cm), but not very dense, only loosely covered with individual flowers. Fewer flowers per raceme than 'Lawrence'. The overall impression only comes about with good pruning and a large number of dense flower clusters! Flowers at the same time as the foliage emerges, which means that light green colours are also visible during the main flowering period. The post-flowering in summer is insignificant, but there is a yellow autumn colouring. 'Macrobotrys' is suitable for facades and pergolas if there is sufficient space for the extremely long flower clusters. Weak fragrance. Direction of twining left ("clockwise"). Poisonous seeds.

For location, pruning, training, climbing aids, structural damage, etc., see "Asian" wisteria.
