Perhaps Great Britain was even THE country of façade greening! The mild and balanced climate (Gulf Stream) played a role here. This was followed by the core European countries of France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as the Benelux countries and the south-eastern European countries as far as Ukraine. In Eastern European countries such as Poland and Russia, the climate is often too harsh. In southern Europe, on the other hand, house walls often become very hot.
Consequently, green walls were mainly found in regions with a temperate climate, i.e. moderately warm summers and mild winters. Here, trellises have been a tradition for centuries, particularly due to Christian wine culture. In German wine-growing regions, for example, there is a special microclimate that also offers ideal locations for green walls.
In areas that are too cold, the choice of plants is limited by harsh frosts, which makes permanent greening difficult. This affects coastal areas with high winds, but especially the European mountains. In the low mountain ranges, building greening can be found north of the Alps up to an altitude of approx. 600 m and south of the Alps up to 1,000 m and above, please take a look at our Frost collection. At higher altitudes, frost and wind make greening impossible.
