Old English garden variety, particularly suitable for trellises and nets. Robust, healthy, delicate and easy to care for. Also for sunny walls! Grows to a height of approx. 5 metres. Fragrant flowers from July to September.
(lat.: Clematis triternata 'Rubromarginata', Cross between Cl. flammula x Cl. viticella by Thomas Cripps / GB 1862)
The location can be sunny to partially shaded; soil should be fresh, humus-rich, and well-drained, as sheltered from the wind as possible. Distance between plants: 1.5 - 3 metres.
Clematis viticella are leaf tendril (petiole) climbers, frost-resistant, and perennial. They grow with moderate vigour, with foliage from May to October, up to about 5 metres in height and often just as wide. Very delicate and loose foliage. The small, brilliant flowers must be able to be seen up close, from a distance they look rather grey. Pruning is done according to "pruning group 3" -- cut down to 20 - 100 cm above the ground, depending on the height the plant should reach the following year. Not susceptible to mildew and clematis wilt.
Choose closely-meshed (narrow) arrangements in a 25 - 35 cm grid. See below for suitable trellis shapes / cable systems. The 5050 wire rope trellis is a good choice and can be used with steel rods. Easy kits (basic and basic-s-) are enough; sometimes the mini or light kits may be sufficient, but a trellis in the medium range allows for optimal development.
